Beat the Salon Blues

Visiting a beauty salon conjures up images of beauty, pampering and relaxation.
And the elation that you feel on your way out is worth experiencing. But research suggests that salons in general could actually make you feel sick by transmitting contagious diseases. And this can happen when basic sanitation and hygiene is overlooked. Using dubious beauty products too can give rise to allergies and rashes.
A CLOSER LOOK AT SALON BLUES
1) Crusts, scales, and lice can attach to combs and brushes and easily transmit infection or infestation to the next unwitting patron.
2) Razors, scissors, combs, clippers and hairpins can accidentally penetrate your skin. Contaminated instruments can then increase the risk of transmitting hepatitis B or even HIV. The infection can get transferred directly to the blood of another person, if that person has open cuts, sores or broken skin.
3) Cuts, nicks, and scrapes at the beauty salon can cause warts, bacterial and fungus infections, and reactions to various products and fumes. Skin infections on the scalp, face and neck such as impetigo (sores) and fungal infections such as tinea capitis and ringworm spread if the instruments and equipment are not cleaned between the sessions and are not used in a hygienic manner.
4) Lack of hygiene at the time of waxing - depilation (hair removal) can cause fungal and bacterial infections. Reusing of wax, using the same spatula to apply wax and putting back the spatula after it has been in contact with the skin can contaminate the wax.
5) Allergic contact dermatitis can occur if your scalp skin is sensitive to the chemicals used in hair preparations such as hair dyes and colours, mousses and gels etc.
6) Hand-held driers, hot rollers, tongs or crimpers, if improperly used may cause burns
7) Using oily cosmetic products can give rise to acne while some products may dry your skin and make it scaly. Skin bleaches may not suit every one.
8) Electrolysis, skin piercing, ear piercing need good personal and environmental hygiene and skilled operators. This can be dangerous if the person has cuts and bruises or the instruments are not sterilised.
TAKING CARE
- Be safe - carry your own implements - comb, brush, clippers and scissors, nail cutter etc.
- You can carry your own change of apparel.
- See that a disposable spatula is used to apply wax. Look out for disposable wax strips. Carry your own if you wish. Reusable cloth strips can give you infection.
- Razors with disposable blades are a must. Electric razors need to be sterilised.
